How Much Does a Wedding DJ Cost?

I share the budget you should be setting aside for entertainment, and what factors influence the final price.

Can you imagine a wedding without music? I certainly can’t! Whether it’s a live band or a DJ, music plays an essential part in the atmosphere of a wedding day. It sets the tone, fuels the good vibes and provides the soundtrack to many of the most important big day moments. Which is why so many couples view my wedding DJ service as a critical investment towards the event, rather than another cost.

If you haven’t worked with a wedding DJ before, and you find the potential cost of booking one difficult to deal with (considering how many successful Spotify sets you’ve played at house parties!). Let’s run through how a DJ can elevate celebrations to a place no homemade playlist could ever achieve.

Why is the Cost of a Wedding DJ Considered an Investment?
A good wedding DJ will do so much more than just play tunes. Depending on their style, and what you want from them, a DJ can become an integral part of your entire day. Looking after the music during your ceremony, entertaining guests during cocktails and, of course, performing during the reception. But if, like me, they are also experienced MC’s, your DJ can also relieve you of some significant logistical pressure.

I take considerable pride in my ability to keep a wedding running smoothly in just the way my couples’ desire. Ensuring every part of the day stays on schedule, making professional introductions and liaising with all the relevant event suppliers to guarantee everyone is where they should be. We are the glue that often holds a wedding together, and the supplier who’ll ensure every single guest feels welcome.

Of course, the main event of any wedding DJ’s service is their performance at the reception. And this is another key area that experienced, professional performers excel in over a ‘press and go playlist’. In my opinion, the cost of a wedding DJ, the value they bring, can be seen so clearly once they’ve hit the decks. The energy they create, their reactive ability to switch up a vibe depending on the mood of the guests, cannot be overestimated. We will get your guests up and dancing by playing the songs your loved ones need to hear at that moment.

If, like me, your Auckland wedding DJ takes requests, you’ll quickly find this part of their service is worth its weight in gold. I’m sure you’ve been to those parties when there’s been squabbles over the music being played, or nobody’s up and dancing because they’re too busy hunched over their phones queuing songs on a playlist. It’s not a vibe and the last thing you want on your wedding day!

Included in the cost of my wedding DJ services is an online song request form, which you can use to share all the songs you, and your guests want to hear on the big day. Plus, I’ll happily work in requests from guests on the night, even downloading specific tunes if they’re not available in my extensive catalogue. A service that never fails to put a massive smile on guest’s faces!

In general, the cost of a professional and experienced wedding DJ in New Zealand starts from around $1000. This figure will increase according to the level of service you require, and the location of your wedding. For example, my wedding DJ service is based in Auckland, and you’ll find that most suppliers here, or in Wellington,

are more expensive than those based in smaller towns. A factor that’s important to remember when looking at the average cost of a wedding in New Zealand, as the general cost where you live may be significantly higher or lower.

Alongside location, a contributing factor to the cost, or rather value, of my wedding DJ service, is experience. I have been DJing for over 20 years. I know instinctively how to get a party started, and can calmly control a large group of people when it matters. It’s a unique skill honed over time and something my couples ‘ could not put a price on.
